Over the summer, I attended an NCCAT (North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching) seminar in Ocracoke. The name of the seminar was "Graveyard of the Atlantic", and it covered everything from the missing Fresnel Lens from the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse to how the waters off NC's coast got the nickname "Graveyard of the Atlantic". I decided to incorporate aspects of this workshop into my lesson plans this year, so the 7th and 8th grade bands have been playing music that deals with the ocean -- songs about shipwrecks, about the the volatility of the ocean, and about historical shipwrecks off the coast of North Carolina. Part of the history of the Graveyard of the Atlantic deals with pirates -- Blackbeard for example! On December 14th, the 7th and 8th grade bands, along with Mrs. Bingham's SAGE classes, took a field trip to Ripley's Aquarium in Myrtle Beach SC. In addition to the wonderful examples of sea life, they had a great exhibit about Pirates. Following are pictures from that field trip!
